The Nest

A semi-open gathering space for students, was originally conceived in 2018 as a project by my students and me at ITESM, Campus Leon. The core idea was to create a dynamic, adaptable structure where the roof could be changed periodically to meet evolving needs while the permanent steel frame remained.

The structure is intentionally oriented to provide shade from the intense sun during peak hours. Initially, we used colorful ribbons for the cover, but in 2023, I was asked to redesign the structure's canopy. For this new iteration, I chose to work with bamboo, a more environmentally friendly material.

This redesign offered a valuable opportunity to delve into the properties of bamboo, including its flexibility, ease of installation, and durability, making it a much more sustainable option. The result is a more organic design that stands out in a city where bamboo is rarely used in architectural projects. The shift to bamboo transformed "The Nest" into a truly unique, eco-conscious, and visually appealing space for the campus community.
